Shasta Regional Medical Center Announces New
President and CEO
Redding, CA – February 1, 2005—Hospital Partners of America announced today that Thomas Salerno has been named president and chief executive officer of HPA’s Shasta Regional Medical Center. The appointment is part of a reorganization of senior management announced by HPA Chief Operating Officer John R. Nickens III, and is effective immediately.
Candace L. Markwith, who had been the hospital’s top executive since its purchase by HPA from Tenet Health in July of 2004, has been asked to consider staying at Shasta Regional in a new position of administrator and chief operating officer.
Salerno, 49, is moving to Redding from Scottsdale, AZ, where he has been responsible for six hospitals as head of the western region for Province Healthcare. His career in hospital and regional healthcare system management and administration has included positions of increasing responsibility in hospitals and health systems located in several California and Arizona communities over a 24-year career.
“We are continuing to invest in the growth and development of Shasta Regional through the addition of Tom Salerno as president,” Nickens said. “We look forward to his leadership and strategic vision as Shasta Regional continues its development, and strengthens its tradition of quality health care for the residents of the north state region.”
“I appreciate the opportunity to work with the caring group of professionals who make up the Shasta Regional staff, and with the talented physicians who admit their patients to our hospital,” Salerno said. “I am looking forward to becoming part of such a friendly community.”
Salerno, who holds a masters degree in public administration from California State University Long Beach, was responsible for the establishment of Province Healthcare’s western region in 1998 and has overseen it since that time.
Previously, he was an executive with ORNDA Healthcare/Summit Health LTD during the 1983-1997 time period and was chief executive officer of medical centers and groups of hospitals in Santa Ana, Whittier, Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo, California, as well as Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona.
Salerno and his wife Kerrie, a native Californian, have two daughters--Alexandria, 15, a high school sophomore; and Sabrina, 12, who is in the sixth grade.
Hospital Partners of America is a privately held company that was founded in 2002, and is headed by Chief Executive Officer Todd Johnson. The company is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Through separate affiliates, HPA owns and operates Shasta Regional, along with Twelve Oaks Medical Center in Houston, Texas, and Austin Surgical Hospital in Austin, Texas.
